Based in Kingston on the southern shores of Lake Wakatipu, Kingston is only a 40 minute drive south of Queenstown in the lower South Island of New Zealand. With a history spanning over 125 years, the Kingston Flyer still departs daily from the Kingston Station from the 1st of October through 30th April each year. Operating on a on a 14km stretch of track, the Kingston line consists of two AB Pacific Class steam locomotives (built in New Zealand), and seven steam-heated wooden vintage carriages dating back to 1898. With scenic trips between Kingston and Fairlight, you can choose a one way or return trip, the Kingston Flyer is also available for charters any time throughout the year. The Kingston railway station is a popular tourist stop and has a souvenir shop, cafe, toilets, parking, BBQ and recreational area, walking tracks, fishing, 9-hole golf course and bowling green.

All trains have a Train Manager aboard and in many cases there are other staff working on the train to ensure you have a safe and comfortable journey. The Tranz Metro also offers transport to major events at Westpac Stadium along with Day Excursion Tickets into the Wairarapa region. The Johnsonville line is a 21 minute journey that offers a number of attractions for visitors along the way. Views of the city, harbour and Hutt Valley can be enjoyed before the train enters the succession of tunnels and begins its ascent into the hills. Paraparaumu is well known for its long beaches and warm sunshine and this train line is a unique experience, showing you bush clad valleys, sheltered harbours, rugged cliffs and some of New Zealand’s finest coastal scenery crammed into a 55 minute trip.
