Otago Goldfields Cavalcade - Otago Goldfields Cavalcade is an annual event that has been going since 1991 when the Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust organised an annual Cavalcade for horse riders, wagoners and walkers keen to re-trace the steps and trails of the gold miners from the 19th century. Walking Trails became part of the Cavalcade in 1994 and have developed into the most popular part of the Cavalcade. This is a great opportunity to make your way through the hills and enjoy the fabulous scenery at a slower pace! However, the Cavalcade is not "a walk in the park" and requires a moderate to high level of fitness. The walking trails are definitely an excellent way to tramp across Otago and access land and tracks that are not normally available to the public. Average daily distances are normally between 15-30 kilometres. The walking trails retrace the very steps the gold miners took to seek and you will be able to witness and experience similar trials and landscapes as faced by those hardy miners. |
